The Leopard – Ruskin Bond

01 Describe the valley where the leopard lived.

The valley where the leopard lived was quite deep and dark even in daytime. As a result, many species of birds and animals dared to come out during daytime. There was almost no human activity except some milkmen. The valley was a like a safe shelter for the entire wildlife.

2. Why did the author return to mountains?

The author mentions that he had lived in urban areas for a long time and he wished to rejuvenate his life, so in order to renew himself physically and emotionally, he returned to the mountains.

3. Why didn’t his approach disturb the birds and animals?

The author’s approach didn’t disturb the birds and animals because there was no threat to them from this human being. He had not gone there to snatch away anything from the lives of the birds and animals. So they became more friendly and accepting towards him. His presence didn’t disturb the birds and animals.



4. What happened when the leopard sensed the author’s presence?

While climbing on a hill, the author spotted a leopard on a rock. The animal sensed the author’s presence and turned towards him. It was confused to find a human presence in this dense forest and when the author clapped his hands, it quietly left the place and disappeared into the jungle.

5. What did the author do to find forktail’s home?

In to find forktail’s home, the author created a camouflage of leaves and cautiously moved towards the tree. He hid himself in the hollow stump of a tree from where he could spot the bird. He did so just out of curiosity.


6. What was the hunters’ advice to the author?

The hunters advised the author to carry a gun along with him whenever he moved in the jungle as there was a leopard moving around.

7. What was the author’s attitude towards men?

The author’s attitude towards men was quite similar to that of the birds and animals living in the forest. Just like those residents of the jungle, the author also believed that men are unpredictable and one should avoid human contact as far as possible.
