Post CoVid-19: Reconfiguring Teaching-Learning Dynamics - (Webinar by Department of English, BKNMU, Junagadh)

COVID19, Corona Crisis, Lockdown.....
All these words may sound scary but in actuality they are not so. In other words,  this pandemic has been a blessing in disguise for us. Rather than getting panicked by death tolls surrounding us, we can take precautions and continue learning from home. Recently various webinars are being organized for the same by many institutions. Today, I got an opportunity to participate in a webinar on "Post CoVid-19: Reconfiguring Teaching-Learning Dynamics" - organized by the  Department of English, BKNMU, Junagadh.
Presided by Prof. Chetan Trivedi Sir, Honorable Vice-Chancellor of the University, the webinar was co-ordinated by Dr. Firoz Shaikh, Associate Professor and Head, Dept of English, BKNMU. Prof. Chetan Trivedi sir energized the participants through his propelling words in his introductory speech.

After initial proceedings, two eminent speakers were requested to share their valuable insights on the subject.
Prof. Dilip Barad, Head of the Department of English, MKBU and Prof. Mahesh Jivani, Department of Electronics, Saurashtra University interacted on the utilization of web platforms for teaching. Rather than giving a speech, both the stalwarts made a lively discussion with infographics and examples of real life. They also answered to the questions of the participants as posted in chat-box during the session. Such interactive and engaging way of presentation made it really gripping.

Human life is passing through a transition stage and 'Work from home' is a new mantra nowadays. All areas are facing a sea change due to corona crisis and academia is no exception. Adaptability to change (to use Darwinian phrase) is a need of the hour for the teachers' fraternity. Almost all justifications for the resistance to technology are nothing but an excuse. It's high time now that we assimilate technological advancements for our classroom teaching.

I have noted down bullet points of the discussion which are shared below. Disclaimer:- These are running notes so some point may be missing and there may be some discrepancy. Apologies for that...!!!
Over to the eminent speakers:-
                          ***       ***         ***      ***      ***
Dr. Mahesh Jivani:
·       Technology is a necessity not a luxury anymore.
·       Online Streaming technology is a part of life
·       Parents these days learn it for their kids’ education
·       Just like the use of a knife – depends on discretion and maturity of the user
·       High speed internet and high quality webcam are preferable.
·       Integrating Technology for teaching is not a rocket science.
·        "Jiska koi nahi uska Google hai"
Prof. Dilip Barad:
(Maslow's Need Hierarchy)
·       How we understand the language of technology is essential.
·       Some people are reacting negatively against online teaching
·       Process is always a difficult part, one has to see the end product
·       As a teacher, we have to reconfigure ourselves
·       Earlier there was a resistance against CCTV in classroom, now suddenly that teacher’s space is broken
·       Difference between Online Teaching and Remote Teaching
·       ERT – Emergency Remote Teaching
·      Zoom has been there since so many years but suddenly we realize about it
·       Need to design our instructional thing
·       Flipped Learning, Blended Learning
·       Shift from Learning to Teaching – not just replicating F2F mode

06 Elements
1.    Environmental
2.    Technical
3.    Interpersonal
4.    Pedagogical
5.    Behavioural
6.    Motivational
Environmental: -
·       Natural Imitation of our Teachers
·       Lack of experience of online Learning
·       Only quality of content matters
·       We rely a lot on eye contact, gestures etc
Technical: -
·       Understanding virtual platforms
·       Blackboard, Canvas – very costly
·       Google Classroom + Drive + YouTube + Kahoot + Google Quiz + Google Meet (personal choice also)
·       Google educational apps more reliable, first choice
Interpersonal:-
·       Writing is at the centre of online communication
·       People fight on social media
·       Tone, mood, feelings not present in written word
·       Communication problems
·       Insults and appreciation both sound extreme in written communication
·       Learner’s Devices and tools
Pedagogical:-
·       Learning Affordance
·       Understanding our environment, our learners, their tools/devices/network capacities
·       Pedagogical model
·       The Networked Teacher – Survey before this webinar – a list of various platforms and apps for online teaching
·       If a teacher is performing on 10 apps, students have to download all of them
·       Students’ devices mostly are not high-end devices
·       Institutes should come down to a not so heavy platform – which may work on slower internet connections also
·       Don’t go for very attractive, glamorous platform

Behavioral:-
·       No facial expression, no gestures, no eye contact
·       Both teachers and students need to be oriented and trained for understanding behavior
Motivational:-
·       Gamification
·       Khan academy videos
·       Use of social media for higher education
·       No peer motivation, no teachers motivation, only self motivation
Prof. Mahesh Jivani
·       Online teaching is not going to replace physical teaching
·       Flipped learning
·       We have to use other alternatives like youtube channel, google websites etc
·       Handwritten notes – apps like camscanner, document scanner, google lens etc can help us convert notes into pdf – WOW…
·       Material on websites 365 days 24/7 students can access anytime, any day
·       Just classes on zoom or webex is not online teaching
·       Online teaching is a subset not the main thing
·       G Suit allows 2000 students, Google Classroom allows 250 students
·       PPT export button in PowerPoint – through single click it will convert into a video
·       Slideshow – record voice, rotate slide as per narration and edit
·       Office 365 – latest version of Powerpoint – facility of webcam
·       Download Power Point Presentation – download in mobile ???? Recorder (app)
·       Very simple things yet very effective and applicable for teaching
Prof. Dilip Barad Sir
·       Maslow v/s Bloom
·       For basic needs, education is not required
·       Digital devide – In earlier times, there was not access to physical schools also
·       We didn’t wait for full attendance in physical class – Was there 100% presence in physical class? If NO, why should we expect the full presence in online teaching?
·       Smart villages rather than smart cities
·       We need high quality eyeways (?)
·       Some years back - “Our students don’t have devices” – It was just an Excuse – Govt provides tablets to students
·       Right now google meet is free for some time
·       Necessary to write Actual name in zoom app rather than just the device name – to avoid Avoid Zoombombing – suggestion from Jivani Sir
·       DIY (Do It Yourself)
·       No need for online teaching in primary education, homeschooling is a good option
·       Online teaching is like fill in the blanks… - Jivani Sir
·       When Newspaper was the media and  Radio was invented, people were afraid that it will replace newspaper – later there was similar fear that TV will replace radio and newspaper but still we have all three of them – assimilation of all of them
·       Everything will assimilate

Shaikh Sir's Ques.:-
E-content development is a major challenge
Jivani sir –
Takeaway from COVID19 situation … just like a laboratory, all universities must establish a studio in their campus… better content – prepare teachers for e-content.
Barad Sir – it can be a new model – preparing video can be a part of the teachers' workload.

A Quick Recap: -

Guildenstern: Prison, my lord?
Hamlet: Denmark’s a prison.
Rosencrantz: Then is the world one.

Where are the songs of spring, aye, where are they?
Think not of them, thou hast thy music too!”
                                        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Juxcub95Bys

03. (and 04).
Forbidden fruit is always tempting.
Love is not love which alters
When it alteration finds”

PANCHAYAT on Prime – A Glocal Entertainment

Web series? Oh, no. We can’t watch it with family, you know, they’re full of sex scenes and slangs…. Well, if you’ve come across such statements, you can now answer their dilemma with this name: Panchayat. It is a saaf-suthri web series created by TVF and streaming on Amazon Prime. Set in a sleepy, remote village named Fulaira in district Fukauli(oh, wait. What?) somewhere in UP, (NO SPOILERS AHEAD) the story revolves round a young urban college-passout and IIM aspirant named Abhishek Tripathi (played by Jitendra Kumar) He completes his graduation and clears competitive exam for the government job. His life witnesses a sea change when he is deputed as a Sachiv (Secretary) in that weirdly named village. Shifting from a world of instagram and instant maggie to a messy, tacky and dusty government office in a tiny hamlet is not a cake walk. He naturally undergoes diasporic angst and slowly starts exploring lives of the villagers, and then….. Oh ok, enough!

It is definitely not flawless but one should begin with the brighter side of the coin. Right? This light-hearted, short series is noteworthy for its offbeat theme, rustic locale and powerful performances. When you have Raghubir Yadav and Neena Gupta in lead roles, what you get is an absolute paisa-vasool performance. As a Pradhan couple, they are absolutely convincing and their on-screen chemistry is also charming. However, acting of youngsters like Faisal Malik and Chandan Roy is a treat to the eyes. Initial awkwardness between Abhishek and others resulting from the rift created by their social background is shown beautifully. Uncanny experiences and problems that he goes through and their jugaad type solutions, gullibile villagers, etc also deserve a mention here.

Gandhiji famously said that the rural India is the real India. Majority of the people living there are still deprived of the basics. Even after seven decades of independence, they have not tasted the fruit of VIKAAS (Social Development) and they still grapple with age-old issues like power cut, lack of infrastructure etc. However ‘Panchaayat’ presents no socialism or didactic verbalism about it. It simply presents reality as it is. Problems like dowry, patriarchy, population, superstition and likewise have been dealt with in and an easy and light-hearted manner.

Funny dialogues in typical local dialects are icing on the cake. Cinematography and background score are other plus points of the series.
Having said this much, it must be noted that the screenplay could have been much better, much tighter to be precise. There are few moments which would make viewers yawn. Admittedly, there is not typical, cliché story-line with intro-middle-end type structure but plot should have been more symmetrical. There is no nail-biting moments at the end of an episode, no ‘one more episode please’ type temptation.
To watch or not to watch, that is the question. Right? Definitely worth watching for its realism, humor, performances and witty statements but over-expectation may lead you to disappointment. So, choice is yours!

IMDB Rating: - 8.9/10

Reflective Blog on Edgar Allan Poe's Short Stories

"Truth is stranger than fiction." - Edgar Allan Poe

It has always been a pleasure, pride and privilege to discuss short stories by Edgar Allan Poe with students. New interpretations and perspectives emerge from each discussion and new techniques of teaching are learnt with each session. That's the charm of teaching literature. However, the quality of teaching depends on the outcome of learning and one of the ways to measure the outcome is to assign some post-task.

Hence, here is a list of areas to be pondered over in preparing a reflective blog on the aforementioned works. Students are expected to think on the below given points, read the stories once again and answer the questions with utmost sincerity and zeal.

Please do comment the links of your blogs in the comment box here and don't forget to tag me in social media posts about the same.

Answer the following questions:-

01) Make a comparative study of 'The Tell-tale Heart' and 'The Black Cat'.

02) Elucidate various narrative techniques in Poe's stories. How far do they help in achieving the 'pre-conceived effect'?

03)  Write a note on the various psychological disorders to be found in the characters of the stories and their significance to that particular text.

04) Analyze the genre of short story keeping in mind Poe's works. References of stories by other writers and/or regional writers are expected in it.

05) Read the translation of 'The Tell-tale Heart' by Mr. Paresh Vyas and published in a leading Gujarati daily Gujarat Samachar dated 18-08-'19. Note down your observations about that translation.

Feel free to ask for any assistance needed in this.

Heartiest wishes...!!!

Thanks.

Edgar Allan Poe's Short Stories : Pre-Task

Pre-thinking Task for Poe's Stories

Horror, macabre, bloodshed, crime, death, perversity, insanity.....
😳😱😰😡👹
All these links pop up on the screen of our mind when we think of Poe's stories.

Why is that so?

One of the reasons is:-
The writer creates an ambience of spine-chilling terror without the use of audio-visual tools and that too, almost 150 years ago when there was no emoji, no gif and no software!👌👏

How does he do so?

One of the answers is:-
Words, words, words (to use Hamletian phrase!)
His remarkably placed adjectives and efficacious phrases need a special attention when we study his stories.

What can be done to observe his usage of linguistic craftsmanship?

One of the techniques is:-
We can observe this phenomenon in a few gems of regional literature before doing the same to the aforementioned writer's works.
They are:-
CLICK HERE to read the story.

The first one is attached herewith as a scanned copy. Read it.
The other is available on Jalso App (treasure of regional literature in form of audiovisual). TO LISTEN TO THIS AUDIO, PLEASE DOWNLOAD THE JALSO APP FROM PLAYSTORE.

INSTRUCTIONS:-
Download Jalso app from Playstore, open a folder named "VAACHIKAM: Dramatic Reading" and there you will find the story - or -
Click on the below given link:-

Hence, your PRE-THINKING TASK is:-
1. Read the first Gujarati story and listen to the audio recitation of the second story. Observe how the two wordsmiths work wonders through words! (Absolute obsession of alliteration😀)
2. List out various adjectives that contribute the most in creating the "pre-established design" or effect that the author intended to create.
3. Which are the phrases you find frightening? How are they placed in the text?
4. Can you find out any other lexical varieties such as figures of speech like simile, metaphor, personification etc? Briefly explain their significance in the story.
5. What is the impact of listening  to the stories on your mind? Which Rasas/emotions erupt in you during and after the reading/listening sessions?
Please feel free to make an apt use of emoticons, gif etc as and where applicable in your answers.

Prepare a blog for the given task and share your link in the comment section here. The deadline for this task is 16th of August 10 am.
You can refer to my blog of similar activity given to the previous batch (September 2018) and their responses:-

Wish you all the very best!👍
Happy Learning!
